I. Background

The 1996 Everest disaster refers to May 10, 1996, when eight people died during summit attempts on Mount Everest. This happened on a single day of the season. In the entire season, fifteen people died trying to reach the summit. This has made 1996 as the deadliest single year in Everest history. The disaster gained wide publicity and it raised questions about the commercialization of Everest. There were four different groups and in total 33 mountaineers who tried climbing the summit on the ill-fated day May 10, 1996 Adventure Consultants Team was guided by Rob Hall, Mike Groom and Andy Harris and three sherpas Ang Dorje, Lhakpa Chhiri, Nawang Norbu, Kami. They were a commercial mountaineering team which were helping clients to achieve their dream of climbing the world‟s tallest summit. Clients included Frank Fischbeck, Doug Hansen, Stuart Hutchison, Lou Kasischke, Jon Krakauer, Yasuko Namba, John Taske, Beck Weathers. Among them, Jon Krakauer, a journalist, was on assignment from Outside magazine. Hall had brokered a deal with Outside for advertising space in exchange for a story about the growing popularity of commercial expeditions to Everest. Another such commercial expedition team was Mountain Madness. Scott Fischer was the lead climbing guide for them. Anatoli Boukreev and Neal Beidleman were the other two guides. Clients included more experienced mountaineers than those in Adventure consultants team.
