My Future Career

Ann Wigmore stated, “The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison” (Goodreads, 2013). This quote summarizes part of the reasoning behind my decision to begin my path towards becoming a nutritionist. I have been deeply impacted by the idea that what an individual consumes can affect their health drastically, whether it’s negatively or positively. I love helping people, especially when it comes to diet, so making my passion into a career as nutritionist would be ideal.

Overview of a nutritionist

After extensive research I discovered that there are so many different paths that I can take with a degree in nutrition. For example, I could go into food and nutrition management, public health nutrition, education and research, and more. The path I am choosing is to become a nutritionist who is an individual who “advises people on what to eat in order to lead a healthy lifestyle or achieve a specific health-related goal” (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2013). There are several duties involved in the profession including assessing clients and determining their diet and health needs. After assessing the clients, I would be able to develop meal plans based on what I determined about their health. I may teach clients about proper food preparation and tips on healthy eating habits. I would also need to be able to explain current nutrition issues and give talks on diet, weight loss, eating habits, and more.

Educational Requirements, Certifications, and Credentials

In order for me to stand out and be known as a professional in my field I should have at least a Bachelor’s degree in nutrition science. However, there are no required certifications besides my degree that I will need in order to do my job.
