Reflection 2

The person I decided to talk to was my husband Jose. He works long hours during this time of the year so I waited until the weekend and when he got home I said I would like to talk to you so we sat down at the kitchen table and we had our talk.

I found it easier to be mindful as I know that he is tired and sometimes I can misread what he is trying to say. This time it was different it was like we were understanding each other and we gave each other the opportunity to express our feeling and to freely say how and what is bothering each of us. We were open to each other’s ideas and we listened and watched each other’s body language and the expressions that were happening.

I noticed we did not raise our voices to one another. I noticed we were calm and we didn’t get upset and walk away like I normally do. It was a very nice and peaceful conversation that we had. We listened to each other without interrupting each other. This conversation was different from the past. I was feeling happy and excited that I was able to talk to him and not interrupt it was a nice feeling.

His facial expressions and body language was not offensive sometime I can feel he is trying to attack me or say things that make me angry. I listened and did not interrupt and I asked questions instead of making assumptions. I think this is the reason he did not get offensive as there was no reason too. The way I displayed what I was saying was a big help. The choice of words also plays a big part in communication.

A few things I learned in class were mindfulness, nonverbal communication, communication strategies. By watching how I reacted to what was being said. Listening without interrupting and let him finish what he is saying. Being mindful of my surroundings and paying attention to what is being said.
