Why is it important for an organization to identify the areas it wishes to measure before the implementation process begins? Provide an example of a company that had clear measurement guidelines in place before implementing its strategic plan. What would be the consequence if these clear measurement guidelines had not been developed before the implementation?

Performance measurements are extremely important in order to determine the areas that need improvement within an organization. More importantly, it is volatile to determine which areas needs improvement before the implementation process. In order to improve something, the areas of improvement must be determined and then evaluated so the areas of focus are revealed.

Cintas Corporation is a perfect example of a company that had clear measurement guidelines in place before implementing a strategic plan. Cintas recently launched their new industrial carpet and tile cleaning service as a new edition to their already booming uniform and facility service rental program. After studying and analyzing competitors in the carpet and tile industry, Cintas used the information and went a step above the competition and developed a new healthier, more powerful, and more affordable option for consumers. After only a couple months in a few trial markets, the new carpet and tile cleaning service has grown into a success and is now being launched in markets across the nation.

The success of this new innovative service is related to the intense market research performed prior to the launch. Implementing this type of service before measuring results could have resulted in a loss of millions of dollars, but instead has formulated a larger foot print for the company and put them step above the competition.
