Introduction•

I decided to take Tesco as my assignment subject of strategic management and planning, a UK’s giant retail industry’s chain of hyper market to high street retail store. The purpose of this assignment is to discuss about factors of PESTEL, SWOT. Scenario building and Porter’s five forces and their implication and influence in its trade.

Tesco plc. is a giant British international grocery and general merchandising retail chain. It is the largest British retailer by both global sales and domestic market share, with profits exceeding £3 billion, and the third largest global retailer based on revenue, behind Wal-Mart and Carrefour. Originally specialised in food but has diversified its products and services with pace of consumer demands and requirements. Now it offers clothing, consumer electrical goods etc.

Tesco's main aim is 'to serve the customer'. Keeping existing customers happy is important, as they are more likely to return. This is more cost effective for the business than acquiring new ones. Tesco now has over 2,200 stores ranging from the large Extra hypermarket style stores to small Tesco Express high street outlets. Tesco's original product range of grocery and general merchandise has diversified to include banking, insurance services, electrical goods as well as telephone equipment and airtime. This move towards 'one stop shopping' means customers can meet all their purchasing needs from one place. Tesco has also expanded its customer base through its Tesco.com website which attracts one million regular users.
