Emotional Intelligence Case Study

Lindsay is sitting on the porch as her roommate/best friend, Nicole, comes home after a long night.

Lindsay: Hey Nicole, how was your night?

Nicole: Oh hey Lindsay! It was so fun! I went out with Aaron and we went bowling, then met up with a few people and went to Mission Bay Park. How was your night?

Lindsay: It was okay. I sat around the house. I thought we had plans to hang out last night?

Nicole: Oh that’s right! Aaron wanted to take me out so we just left.

Lindsay: That’s cool. I’m glad you had a great time. But I was pretty upset that I could have done something last night, instead I waited around for you.

Nicole: We can go out tomorrow night?

Lindsay: Sure that’s great, but this is the fourth time you’ve done this to me.

Nicole: Done what?

Lindsay: [upset that she’s unaware of the conflict] Done what? The fourth time you’ve ditched me.

Nicole: We aren’t married Lindsay. I have my own life. We see each other every day. We live with each other! What else do you want from me? A contract of commitment?

Lindsay: No Nicole. I’m trying to talk to you about an issue. Why are you lashing out at me?

Nicole: Because all you do is complain about how I’m not there! That’s all you do is complain about our friendship. Are you sure you even want to be friends anymore? Friends shouldn’t be so demanding.

Lindsay: I’m complaining because there is an issue Nicole. I love you. You’re my best friend and I feel like we’re straying from each other. I understand you want time with Aaron; you could at least let me know you’re going to be doing something else. Rather than leave me at home alone and not say anything.

Nicole: [Realizing that Lindsay is genuinely upset] I’m sorry Lindsay. I love you too. I’ve just been so busy at work and Aaron has been getting upset that I can’t be with him all the time.
