Experiment 1: Slime Lab

Abstract:

Slime was produced in the laboratory similar to a slime based on Guar gum; it was prepared using three chemical substances. The chemical substances were mixed and heated till they became a thick liquid like substance that was clear in texture.

Object:

The object of this experiment was to prepare slime similar to Mattel Toy Corporation slime, but instead of using Guar gum, polyvinyl alcohol was used as an alternative in conjunction with sodium tetraborate decahydrate and warm water. The slime was observed for its texture and use.

Theory:

The chemistry of slime consisted of three main chemical substances: Sodium tetraborate decahydrate, polyvinyl alcohol, and warm water. Sodium tetraborate decahydrate or borax for short was used as a bonding agent in the molecular level of the slime. It converted a linear polymer into a cross linked array. It is toxic to humans by digestion, and is in found in a variety of different uses such as: solders, glazes, and enamels. Polyvinyl alcohol is a polymer that was manipulated used borax. It is a substitute for Guar gum and is a consistent ingredient when preparing slime. The water was used as a heat source to engage the chemical reaction of the other two substances.

Procedure:

The experimental procedure followed as described in the manual

Data:

Table 1. Preparation of Slime

Chemical Substance | Amount |

Sodium Tetraborate decahydrate | 0.010 g |

Polyvinyl Alcohol | 0.481g |

Water | 12.6 mL |

Discussion:

Three chemical substances were used to produce a slime product. The slime was a thick liquid with elastic recoil when it was cut with lubricated scissors. Its appearance was clear and solidifies if left untouched for a period of time on the watch glass. The beaker I choose to prepare the slime was 50 mL because I figured it was the smallest size need and would take less time to heat up. When I wrote my name on the watch glass the slim absorbed the...
