I have participated in wrestling all four years of high school. A couple of my accolades are being a four year varsity starter, being a sectional alternate, and being a sectional qualifier. Wrestling has taught me many things that I believe will make me very successful in life, things such as grit, working hard, and to never ever give up.

Wrestling is unlike any other sport, it is so honest. That is how it teaches you to want something and to work as hard as you possible can for that something. You are accountable for yourself because it is just two people on a mat scrapping to get a win. If you lose, you didn’t lose because someone didn’t catch the ball or because someone can’t make a lay up, you lost simply because you weren’t good enough. There are three things you can do once that happens, you can quit, you can stay and keep doing the same mistakes, or you can stay and say to yourself “what can I do better next time?”. If you choose to do the last one you are taking action to better yourself. Wrestling is the only sport to do this. While I still love other sports like football, basketball, and baseball they can allow you to blame someone else for a loss as stated earlier.

Wrestling has also taught me to never quit because of the team aspect and how physically and mentally demanding the sport is. You owe it to the team to win or in some cases not get pinned. You have to not give up even if it means you have to bridge on your neck for 2 whole minutes to not give up the pin. If you do give up, you not only let yourself down, you let down 13 other people. The sport is very tough mentally and physically, you have to be willing to put it all on the line, everybody is training to be the best, you have train harder than the best. You have to be willing to get your head banged on for six straight minutes.
