Goldratt’s Theory Applied to the Problems Associated with

an Ineffective Quality Control Program in the Chemical Industry

Abstract

The emphasis of this paper is to identify and solve the core problem associated with an ineffective quality control program in the chemical industry. The core problem will be resolved with the assistance of Dr. Eliyahu Goldratt’s Thinking Process based on the Socratic method of “if…then” reasoning. Throughout this paper we will examine the various steps of the Thinking Process as outlined by Dr. Goldratt.

The Current Reality Tree (CRT) solely undertakes the role of identifying the core problem or the constraint. Thus, Step 1 is constructing the CRT. The CRT is constructed from the undesirable effects associated with an ineffective quality control program in the chemical industry. The CRT is compiled by organizing the undesirable effects in cause-effect relationships, thus allowing the core problem to be identified. The core problem in this case is that “there is a lack of available funds to establish an effective quality control program to improve operations.” The Current Reality Tree is read from the bottom up using “if…then” statements.

The Evaporating Cloud (EC) is an “idea generator” that will assist in creating a scheme to break the constraint in a “win-win” scenario. The EC is established to eliminate the core problem. The EC starts with an objective which is the opposite of the core problem....
