4 Stages of Production: Variety Show

Our group went to ABS-CBN’s musical variety show “ASAP 18” Our tour and observation was made possible with the help of ASAP18’S Kathy Solis, from the PR Department. She helped us interviewed different people from different production staff.

1. Pre-production or Development

This stage is all about brainstorming. All they do is to generate ideas or concept, do research,

develop a theme, take script/spills through various drafts to final draft, and develop visual ideas. They also hold production meetings which they will decide all about the design production. We weren’t able to see the brainstorming part but we we’re able to see the design production at Studio 10, ABS-CBN’s largest studio. It is where the crew construct sets, organize set dressing, make or buy or borrow costumes and props, select appropriate hair/make-up design. They start to prepare the lights, the floor plans and blocking plots to where will make the shoot easier.

Then the artist starts to dress and the lights and cameras are all set. Then before the shoot they will hold technical and dress rehearsals. Before the show, they will also brief the audience about what to do during the show.

3. Production

The Production stage is where to shoot the program. Since we attended a taping episode, they record the whole show. They follow a certain storyboard as their guide to know the sequence or the flow of the show. They have three floor directors, they are the ones who the audience will follow on when to clap, stand or what else to do. A production staff told us that a Live variety show is much complicated on the production stage because it is on-going while a recorded one is easy because when something wrong came up, they can take it another shoot.

4. Post-production

They say that this stage of production is controversial. We weren’t allowed to be here because this stage is where they will edit the show and do...
