James Fenimore Cooper was one of the first popular American novelists. His contribution for American Literature is quite large with different kinds of novel such as spy novel, sea novel, historical or frontier novel. The Last of the Mohicans is a famous work of James which included in “Leather stocking” series with The Pioneers, The Pairie, The Pathfinder and The Deer slayer. This novel took place during the French and Indian war. It is an epic about love, friendship, family as well as nature.

Last of the Mohicans is a long story with complex character line. First, we should mention to frontier hero of the novel. He is Hawkeye, a naturally white man but familiar with Indians more than civilization. Hawkeye symbolizes for the mix between different cultures. Through this character, James Cooper also can create a link between white and Indians. This action is considered very strange. Second, opposite to Hawkeye, Magua is novel’s villain. This cunning man is chief Huron. He always possesses a burning desire for retaliation against Colonel Munro. However, he also wants to marry Cora Munro. It makes him become complicated in motivation. Next, we are going to find out about another character, who is friend with Hawkeye. He is Chingachgook, a noble Mohicans woodsman and also the last of the Mohicans, as the novel’s title. The only important thing can make Chingachgook feel emotional is nothing but his son Uncas. Nevertheless, Uncas falls in love with Cora Munro and then dies. When Uncas is alive, he usually follows Hawkeye in order to learn about friendship as well as consider Hawkeye as father. Lover of Uncas, Cora Munro is a sentimental heroine. She is the elder daughter of Commander Colonel Munro with his first Negro wife. Cora also suffers tragedy like Uncas.
