Behavior and Its Effect on Education

Of the many issues facing leadership teams today, the ones that seem to continue surfacing are: student behaviors, over-age school population, and lack of parental support. Some feel as this can all be contributed to the socio economic backgrounds of the students. Overcrowded classes and school demographics can all be factors as well. To address these problems, my school enlisted the help of a School Improvement Team or SIT.

Each member of the school improvement team (SIT) was carefully chosen according to the objective of the team. A chairperson was chosen because every good team needs a strong leader too keep them focused on the main goal. The chairperson heads each meeting and collaborates with the data specialist to collect the discipline data before the meeting and then determine what issues the SIT needs to address. A parent liaison and parent/community leader serves as the SIT’s communicator to the community and parents. They share what it discussed at the SIT meetings with parents and community leaders during PTSA meetings and weekly Parent University meetings. They also pair students with mentors from the community and solicit the help of positive community leaders for the school. They are able to go out into the community and share the good things that are going on in the school and recruit community or parent volunteers for the school. The school administrator learns alternatives to suspending students and having them loose instructional time. They can share these alternatives with teachers and encourage them to handle minor behavior issues in the classroom; if possible.
