1. What kind of parenting style did your parents have? Be sure to include an example in your answer that illustrates your answer. (Note: No examples of physical or sexual abuse, please.)

My parents had an Authoritative parenting style. My parents had strict rules and failure to follow such rules usually resulted in punishment. But they were always willing to explain the reasoning behind these rules. My parents had high expectations and always expected me to do my best. Although my mother could be controlling, we still had a very close relationship. I always had a curfew and she was always waiting on me to come home. My parents were my very best friends! I never really realized how wonderful they were until I had my own child.

2. What kind of parenting style is the best for children? Explain why you think that this style is the best.

I think the Authoritative parenting style is the best parenting style. It’s important to have established rules and guidelines that children are expected to follow. However, this parenting style is much more democratic. Authoritative parents are responsive to their children and willing to listen to questions.

3. What kind of parent would you like to be to your own children? Be sure to explain your reasoning as to why this parenting style is the best choice for you.

I think I also have an Authoritative parenting style. I want my child to have rules and learn to follow them. But I want to be a more nurturing and forgiving rather than punishing. I want my disciplinary methods to be taken seriously but I also want to be reasonable and supportive. I want my child to be self-reliant as well as socially responsible and cooperative. I hope to teach her to be academically successful and productive. The Authoritative parenting style is a better choice for my family.
