Worker’s Death Brings Perils of Immigrant Employees into View

By: Maria Sacchetti

Yoga Pasupathipallai was a Sri Lankan woman that was living in extreme poverty in her home country. Her luck began to grow when in 1995 she won the green card lottery, which allowed her to leave her home country and go live in the USA. Once she arrived in America, she seized the opportunity that she had received and began working. She worked at a bakery and was assigned the task to put trays on the conveyer belt. For many years nothing happened, but one day her apron got caught in the machinery and she ended up getting choked. The bakery was then required to incorporate proper safety measurers and fined $16,500.

The rest of the news article states that this accident is only one of 21 cases since 2000. Proper safety measures for poor immigrant workers have to be implemented so that these cases never happen.
