Re: Field Study Orientation Suggestions for Improvement

Per your request for feedback regarding the Capstone Field Study orientation process, I submit the following suggestions as opportunities of improvement for future cohorts:

1. Coordinate with Regular Time Slot

It’s my opinion that having the orientation on a Saturday in a poor choice. This MBA program is essentially a night program to accommodate student’s full-time work and family schedules. Given that, weekends are pretty sacred and limited – especially in the summer months. Given that, I suggest that the orientation be offered during a week night. There appears to be a regular break between electives and the start of module four classes. I suggest that the orientation be coordinated to fall on the normal class evening and time. For example: the S10 cohort typically meets on Thursday evenings from 5:45-9:45. This is a time that is convenient for students and would be a great time to hold an orientation class.

Although a far second option, if the orientation simply must be held on a Saturday, don’t schedule it for the middle of the day; hold it right away in the morning and let people get on with their day. Having it is the middle of the day on a Saturday more or less prohibits any other plans for the day with family or otherwise.

2. Include Company Representatives

It would be beneficial to have representatives from the respective companies participating in the field study present at the orientation; this would provide for a number of opportunities: first of all, it would inform the project sponsors about the work that is to be completed and the requirements for the students. It would also allow for groups to meet with and introduce themselves to companies right away following the orientation presentation and get moving on the project while everyone is engaged in the mindset.
