The article I chose was in regards to credit unions having an influx of customers due to the customers leaving banks. This article was very clearly written and what I would consider to be accurate. I feel that it could have gone in to a little more depth as far as showing both sides of the story. The article shared several facts about credit unions putting them in a positive light, while the only facts given about banks were negative. I don’t think that any facts were ignored, they just weren’t shared equally.

The article failed to share the alternative perspective, which would have been that of the banks that have not joined the fee bandwagon. The article lumped all banks together and did not differentiate between local and national banks. I think that the article implied that all banks received a bailout while no credit unions did. If you were someone who has been hiding under a rock for the last few years and didn’t know about the bailouts and which banks accepted them; by reading this article, it would seem that all banks were given bail out money.

I feel that the article shows bias towards credit unions not just in their surge of membership as the title of the article states, but also in that the author’s opinion is that credit unions are better overall than banks. Even at the end of the article, the author posts a link only for more information on credit unions and nothing about banks. I think it is important to realize and be able to make distinctions when undertaking a critical evaluation to get all the facts. I think if you take the critical thinking approach in evaluating news articles, you will be able to find the truth in everything and not have to rely on other people’s opinions or biases.
