How I prepare for a role

Step 1 (Identify the Problem and Set Priorities) – I read the script, I set in mind the given circumstances, I figure out the character’s development all throughout the play, I figure out the ‘superobjective’ of the character, and I fill in the first part of my Character Sketch (Personal Info).

Step 2 (Deepen the Understanding and Gather Relevant Information) – This is when I do research; background of the author and the play and time of the play. This is actually the first thing I do, but either way, I think it’s applicable (and I’m considering trying it to evaluate if it will affect anything).

Step 3 (Enumerate Options and Anticipate Options) – This is when I ‘physicalize’ the character. I enumerate options; if I do this will it work? How about if I don’t do this? I give my character flaws, mannerisms, disabilities, nuances and then I finish off my Character Sketch (Psychological and Social).

Step 4 (Assess the Situation and Make a Preliminary Decision) – I justify my options and I finalize the character that I am going to be bringing to rehearsals. Step 1-3 should’ve been done before the first rehearsal starts. This is when I move the character, explore other options, add and eliminate.

Step 5 (Scrutinize the Process and Self-Correct as Needed) – the road to perfecting my character. This includes working on the notes given by the director, self-notes, the eagerness to improve, and letting it all out during rehearsals.

In order to avoid re-creating or similarities to the other characters that I’ve done, I question. Why am I going to the left? Why not the right? Why did the director block me here? Why am I soliloquizing? Why am I holding this?
