Whirlpool Case Study

As the CEO of whirlpool, I would realize that we could not just keep all of our appliances plain and white. With all of our competitors creating aesthetically pleasing appliances we need to do the same. Whirlpool needs to find a way to compete in the design aspect of the company while still maintaining the low price and reliability. First I would hire more designers and pump money into the design section of the company. I would task the designers with figuring out ways to make the appliances look better without actually changing the functionality of the machines. The ideas would need to be new and implemented in such a way that Whirlpool appliance would be easily distinguishable from other appliances. Ideally I would want them to keep it as cheap as possible but still reliable. Raising the prices slightly would be okay because most average consumers would be okay with paying the extra for an appliance that would look more aesthetically pleasing and sleek in their households.

The company already produces commodity items such as standard washer and dryers but in order to attract the higher end customers Whirlpool needs to also create premium products. This could be easily achieved by investing in research and development to look at what makes other companies high end machines better and trying to use some of those technologies while simultaneously developing their own new technologies. The company needs to continue to produce the base line models while also producing the higher end, more luxury models.

After the design and development phases are over, Whirlpool will need to run two separate ad campaigns. The first of these should let the consumers know that their products are new and exciting. The ads should focus primarily on Whirlpools new found innovation and how sleek and exciting the new products are. The second of these should focus on the high end luxury models.
