I. Introduction - The problem of sleep deprivation is not new and yet more and more people are becoming victims of the consequences that of sleep deprivation. 

A. Attention Getter: More and more people are sleeping less each day without realizing the very harmful effects that not sleeping on time and at regular intervals for the required time can have on our physical as well as mental health (Sleepnet; Ledoux). 

B. Reason to Listen: Many people need sleep to do daily functions every day.

C. Thesis Statement: The human body needs a certain amount of sleep every day for it to function effectively

1. Many parts of the brain stop functioning properly

2. Can affect a person's memory and mood/ stress

3. The person can be impaired and become a hazard to him/herself and others.

II. Body

A. Many parts of the brain stop functioning properly.

1. body temperature increases

2. hormone levels become unbalanced, adrenal hormones rise while growth hormones decline (Journal of the American Medical Association)

3. Heart rate decreases, risk of dying 38% and 65% increase to die from stroke (Christine Boufis)

2. specific diseases that are related to sleep disorders and they can also affect a person's sleeping pattern, such as chronic insomnia, sleep apnea - a condition where breathing stops repeatedly during the night, sometimes hundreds of times; it occurs when muscles at the back of the throat become overly relaxed and block the airway (Information on sleep deprivation)
