Career Exploration

Over the years, as I learned more about the career options available to me in my chosen field of study, I became indecisive about a career path. By attending rigorous college courses and informative lectures, I now feel more prepared to succeed in choosing a field of study. I was first interested in medical office management. I obtained an Associate in Applied Science in 2005. Ideally we would all like to find a job for what we went to school for, right? But like many other young adults these days, I was unable to find work after finishing school so I took a job as a billing clerk for a construction company. I worked my way up to project manager. My heart simply wouldn’t allow me to be content with sitting at a desk all day long. I wanted to help people…that is what I went to school for. In 2008, after having received horrible patient care during a hospital stay at Jackson in Miami for the birth of my son, I became very interested in working in labor and delivery or becoming a midwife to do what I could to make sure other people didn’t experience the same poor care I received. I made a decision that same year to go back to school for nursing. Ultimately, when a friend of mine introduced me to nurse anesthetics last year, I was convinced that this field would be most beneficial to my family financially, with salaries averaging around $165,000.00 per year. A career in this field would also provide me with the flexibility to work a few longer days but have more days off in between to spend time with my family or travel if I chose to do so.

This past fall, when I called Nova University to get information on applying for their nursing program, I happened to get in touch with someone who introduced me to their dianostic sonography program. At the moment, I am highly considering switching my major over to sonography. After interviewing and being accepted to start in the program in...
