Individuality
Individuality is about a person’s uniqueness. It focuses on a person’s own attributes of character, personality, abilities, identity, skill, etc. It is about seeing each person as an individual not as a part of a larger group, for example ‘people with disabilities’, 'or people who are older' – they are a person first.
Independence
Independence is not about doing everything yourself, on your own. It is about being able to choose your lifestyle and access the support you need or want, to live that lifestyle. It is about maximising opportunities, choices and development. This includes being able to exercise your rights and responsibilities and taking a full part in society.
Privacy
Privacy relates to keeping private the areas of a person’s life that would ‘normally’ be kept private. This includes privacy about personal information, intimate and personal care and day-to-day details of their life.
Working in Partnership
Working in partnership features highly in person-centred work. The person is working in partnership with those around them, i.e. professionals, family and friends who are chosen by them. A true partnership means that the person has genuine control and choice in their lives.
