The End of the Incan Empire

The Incans had a vast Empire throughout the Andes mountains. They did many amazing things there until the Spanish came in 1532.

Lets get to the details here. In 1493 Huayna Capac became Sapa Inca and the Incans were at their highest and greatest point. That is, until the Spanish started coming to the mountains. They carried with them, smallpox, and it spread to the Incan Empire. The smallpox probably killed Huayna Capac in 1527 but no one really knew for sure because the Incans were not writers, as such thing did not exist to them. About 250,000 Incans died because of the smallpox. Unfortunately Huayna died before naming his Successor.

Many people thought Huayna's son Huascar should rule while many others believed the oldest son Atahualpa should hold the throne. The sons ended up starting a Civil War over who would be the next Sapa Inca.

Atuhualpa eventually won the war at the cost of thousands of lives. Over 200 of Huayna's sons were killed in inhumane ways. From being hung, weighed down with heavy weights and thrown into rivers and lakes, or thrown off cliffs. All of Huascar's female relatives were hung in trees by their hair or arms and one thousand of Huascars warriors had their hearts brutally ripped out and dreadfully scattered across the battle fields.

In November of 1532 after the war had been won, Atahualpa captured his brother. He then traveled to Cajarmarca and set up camp. A 57 year old travelor in search of silver and gold, Francisco Pizarro, and leader of a small Spanish group from spain found out the Incans were nearby. Pizarro invited Atahualpa to meet him the next day. It is unsure as to whether or not Atahualpa thought this was a friendly invitation or not as Atahualpa showed up with 6,000 unarmed men. Following this, Pizarro ambushed Atahualpa and his men in the main square. Pizarro fought with cannons, muskets and steel weapons. The Incans were forced to fight back with bare hands.
