Decisions in Paradise, Part II

Nik recognizes the urgency to establish a greater presence of the police department in Kava and understands that she will have to find solutions for all the problems in Kava. Nik will have to analyze, evaluate, and improve the situation within the PD, rebuild the organization, and build a code of ethics. Applying the intuitive decision-making techniques will help improve the performance within PD and increase the quality of lives in Kava. John Naisbitt, former executive with IBM (2008) states, “Intuition becomes increasingly valuable in the new information society precisely because there is so much data.”

Nik has been in Kava for a few weeks and its time for Nik to start making decisions. Nik has started making her checklist starting with framing the problem, then making a decision, and finally evaluating the decision.

Framing the Problem

The problem

With the majority age being 15 in Kava, there is little to no supervision. The people of Kava deserve a safe environment to grow up, be healthy, and obtain an education. Self defense should not be what consumes the Kava people’s day. With very few people 18 years and older, it will be difficult for Nik to hire officers to ensure safety in Kava. Nik will need to build the PD from the ground up and has decided she needs to attain help from the States with hiring and on-the-job training of the local people in Kava.

Criteria, goals, and objectives

The goal is to have a Kava PD fully functional and self-sustainable within six months. With help from the States in the beginning, the Kava people will learn to train and hire more officers when necessary. First on the list is finding a translator so that Nik can communicate with the local people. A competitive wage for the translator is a necessary cost as it is the first step to success.
