Institutional research is a wide-ranging kind of work that is mainly done in higher education such as community colleges and universities. There main priority is to inform and plan in areas such as admission, financial aid, staffing, finance, enrollment management and facilities. The AIR, which stands for the Association for Institutional Research is the world's largest professional organization for institutional researchers. AIR provides educational resources, best practices, and professional-development opportunities for its more than 4,000 members. Its primary purpose is to support members in the process of collecting, analyzing, and converting data into information that supports decision-making in higher education (Association for Institutional Research). This paper examines the job of an institutional researcher M. Yates at Miami Dade College.
Why did you choose a career in institutional research?
M. Yates was looking for a job in research, she enjoyed doing research for her professor while completing her graduate degree when she was a TA but she was not sure how to pursue a career in research when she finished college until she saw the job listing online for Miami Dade and thought it would be a great fit for her. What is the most important service you provide to your institution? She provides strategies to hire more faculty and staff members and plans for bigger facilities as well as accreditation reviews and statistical analysis.
