Violence against Men be passed into Law

Statistics show that in 100 domestic violence situations approximately 40 cases involve violence by women against men. This means that of the 100 cases of domestic abuse, 40 men go unnoticed and are continued to be regarded as the “perpetrator” of violence when in fact they themselves are also victims. Tragic? Yes, but this is the bitter reality that men in the society are facing.

Over the past years, it has been a widely held assumption that women are always the victims and men are the perpetrators. This fact became an eye-opener to women’s groups and led for these groups to come out in the open and air out their century-old appeal to protect women and children against male abusers who are considered to be violent and vicious. Their plea was heard and so came the specialized law intended for abused women and children known as Republic Act No. 9262. With the rise of this special law came the problem of gender inequality. With the researchers’ aim of attaining gender equality, violence against men should be passed into law. The researchers were able to develop three arguments that would support their claim of passing a law on violence against men in the Philippines. Violence against men should be passed into law in the Philippines because there is a need for men to be considered equal to women and the Philippine law fails to notice that, the lawmakers compromise some civil liberties of men, and the society itself stereotypes men.

It’s really hard to define violence. But despite the dilemma of putting violence into words, people always recognize violence when they see one. Violence being relative is hard to extract a single meaning from, for what appears to be a violent act on one person may not appear to be an act of violence towards the other.
