Below are some terms commonly found in a management setting. Are they concepts or constructs? Give two different operational definitions for each.

A. First-line supervisor

The term first-line supervisor can be looked at as a concept in the management setting. One definition of the first-line supervisor could be someone who has direct reports that report directly to them. This could be perhaps a line leader of a production line that has the people actually operating the machine reporting to them. The first-line supervisor is supervising the people that report to them. Another operational definition for first-line supervisor would be a manager who reports to the director of operations in a company. There are several stages of management in an organization and a first-line supervisor can have both people above and below them in the hierarchy of the organization.

B. Employee morale

The term employee moral can be viewed as a construct in the management setting. One way to look at employee morale is a very simple definition. How much does an employee feel about their job? Do they like or dislike the job that they are completing. Another operational definition could be the punctuality of employees, and how often they are on time to work. If employee morale is good employees will be excited to come to work, and consequently will arrive on time.

C. Assembly line

The term assembly line in the management setting is a concept. An assembly line can be looked at as where production occurs, the area of an organization where items that a company produces are assembled into the finished product. Another operational definition is an area of operation where the assembly line workers spend their hours worked. Laborers in an organization that uses an assembly line for their production will have employees that spend most of their day there around the assembly line.
