Analysis on Indicators

Economic Indicators

1. Employment- There are lots of job opportunities ranging from chefs, cleaners, waiters or waitresses, supervisors and managers from food restaurants such as Food for Thought, retail assistants and managers from retail shops such as souvenir shops, information assistants (?) at information counter at visitor centre, maintenance workers and cleaners to ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness of the park (Botanic Gardens).

2. Competitiveness-  Singapore Botanic Gardens has the most number of collection of plants in Singapore before Gardens by the Bay was opened in October 2011. It is known that the 63.7-hectare garden is a key recreational park and national tourist destination as well as a leading tropical and horticultural institution. The Gardens' extensive collection of over 60,000 plants includes the National Orchid Garden, the most comprehensive collection of tropical orchids in the world.

Environmental Indicators

1. Energy Consumption- Most establishments within the park uses fans instead of air-conditioners to cool their environment such as the visitor centre, National Orchid Garden entrance area etc. The only few establishments that we encountered which have air-conditioners were the gift and souvenir shop and some restaurants. According to Energy Efficient Singapore (http://app.e2singapore.gov.sg/Households/At_Home_10_Energy_Challenge/EnergySaving_Habits/EnergySaving_Tips.aspx), the electricity used by an air-conditioner is equivalent to the energy used by about 32 fans. Therefore, Botanic Gardens is eco-friendly as the amount of energy consumed by it is diminutive as compared to other parks which use many air-conditioners to cool and function their environment.
