Abstract

This paper will discuss the current ethical standards used by counseling professionals according to the American Counseling Association (ACA) as well as the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA). In addition, it will describe where the standards can be found along with the publication date(s), the length of time in which the codes of ethics were founded, next available revision dates with the whereabouts of publication, the format in which the counselor will utilize to be educated on newly updated standards and ethics within their profession. It will also incorporate the state of Florida’s laws as it is instituted in correlation to the ACA and AMHCA code of ethics. It will describe where the information can be located for the state of Florida. Finally, it will discuss five issues that may arise within the mental health arena; it will identify whether the response will be guided or directed by the ethical standard of state laws or the counseling professional code of ethics or both, it will also identify the location in which it can be located and the description as to whether ethical standards or laws would be consulted to guide ones actions.
