Female House Music Producers In A Male Dominated Industry

Introduction House music, a subgenre of EDM (Electronic Dance Music), is one of the fastest growing music genres today. Until recent years, the genre has been considered as an underground genre, but lately it has become more mainstream, and most of the pop music we hear on the radio today is influenced by EDM. The house scene has been growing rapidly and DJs and producers are our times rock stars. A vast majority of EDM artists are males and there are very few popular female artists. A majority of the most popular House DJs and producers come from Sweden and the Netherlands. As a kid, I grew up listening to House music and many of my friends are active in the industry. Since my 16th birthday I have been going to nightclubs and I have always been fascinated by the club culture. Since the genre has not been popular for very long, there has not been a lot of research made about why the scene is as male dominated as it is. There is a knowledge gap in this field, and I hope that my research will fill this gap. Because of the fact that many producers and artists come from, and live in Sweden, it is going to be my field location.
