Feedback Folio, Group E: Distinctive Musical Moments

What is rap and what does it sound like? Rap is a sub culture that came from hip hop, where MC’s express there raps either through lyrics they wrote down or freestyle. In the early 80’s in the U.S. we experienced a new area with a lot of punk and bright colors. Also, this is the year hip hop took over and today hip hop is one of the most listened to music around the globe. Originating from New York in the Bronx some influential people that help start this off like “Grandmaster Flash” and “Sugarhill Gang” started and era where dj’s would come to spin a mix and people would rap also, the beginning of breakdancing came along too. The fan base for these parties began to grow and in order to control the crowd at a level the MC’s would rap and rhyme with the beat this how rap came about.

The song “The Message by, Grandmasterflash, is about people who live in poverty and is on the edge so anything can tick them off mainly (Black and African Americans). His song was a way of expression of what was going on through lyrics and rap. During these seconds a group of Black men was planning there night to go out and hang. Unfortunately a cop car pulled up thinking they were part of gang since gangs was a critically issue back then. I believe this is a distinctive musical moment between the seconds of 5:12 and to the end because ,the whole song is about not causing a person button because something horrible will happen. When the police pull up you hear the sirens pull up you understand and get the feeling of what everyone was going through at this time. Also, it kind of creates this feeling just from listening to it that the people in this time had no way out of crime and the gang life . I think rap lost its meaning in today’s music bemuse mostly all you hear about are females how much money the rapper has and just things that can’t help people become more influential in life rather than so negative.
