Consumerism

Every country in the world today relies on two things for survival; its economy and its people. But in a deeper sense, a country’s economy cannot survive without its people because people buy products, material, and luxuries which keep an economy alive. These people are known as consumers. We as consumers do not have a high obligation to educate ourselves and spend our money more wisely and ethically. Of course this may sound crazy how I would suggest this, but without those who spend their money on random stuff, our economy would crash because of the lack of demand.

As most of us know, our economy relies on a simple idea of supply and demand. When a new product comes out of a production line, people usually want it and start saving or spending for it. As demand increases so does supply. A company whose supply is greater than the demand is doomed to failure. This is not because I am being pessimistic, but because it is common sense. Someone who is making a product with no consumers cannot sell their product thus losing money and their business. This is why companies usually announce the arrival of a new product before hand and allow pre-orders of it. They estimate they hype for the product and the amount of pre-orders and they produce a reasonable amount of that item.

In a lot of cities in America, there are areas that are designated to large companies. This area is usually known as downtown. In the downtown of cites, one can usually see enormous buildings that rise up high in the skyscrapers that tower over us. These are symbolic in many ways to me. People in these businesses are trying to give off the vibe that are bigger, better, and more powerful than any normal person. But little do they know, we as a people give them their power. They are trying to intimidate the everyday person into believing that he or she is not as great as these monumental towers and that we cannot compare to their greatness.
