1 Noun phrase.

Example:

a, The girl

b, The pretty girl (adj+ head noun)

c, The pretty girl in the corner (adj+ head noun+ prepositional phrase)

d, The pretty girl who became angry ( adj+ head noun+ relative clause)

Bốn ví dụ trên mới chỉ là ví dụ minh họa cho simple noun phrase.

Complex noun phrase có dạng như sau:

The pretty girl standing in the corner who became angry because you waved to her when you entered is Mary Smith.

Tương tự, với bài mô tả tranh ở trên lớp:

Thay vì nói: “these children”

← “these adorable children with smiling happy faces”

← hoặc “ these adorable children who are running in the yard/the adorable children running in the yard (rút gọn mệnh đề quan hệ)

Một ví dụ khác về noun phrase:

+ Our mother

+ Our beautiful mother

+ Our beautiful young mother who is travelling to Japan

Note: Có thể thấy Noun phrase càng có nhiều từ thì sự vật (head noun) càng được miêu tả cụ thể.

Mục đích: Hiểu biết về noun phrase có vai trò quan trọng trong reading comprehension ( đọc hiểu)-> dịch thuật. Trong writing, bài viết mà có nhiều complex noun phrase (thể hiện vốn từ vựng và khả năng ngữ pháp) thì được điểm cao hơn (tương tự với những bài viết sử dụng nhiều loại câu: simple sentence, complex sentence, compound sentence, complex-compound sentence …)

2, Coordinating Conjunction and Subordinating Conjunction

- Coordinate (adj): ngang hàng, cùng chức năng

Coordinating Conjunctions: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.

Khi Coordinating Conjunctions được dùng để nối 2 mệnh đề độc lập (independent clauses) thì thường có dấu phẩy:

He wants to play for UConn, but he has had trouble meeting the academic requirements.

We can broil chicken on the grill tonight, or we can just eat leftovers.

b, Subordinating Conjunctions.

- Đứng ở đầu mệnh đề phụ (Subordinate clause)/mệnh đề phụ thuộc (dependent clause).
