Part I: Group Development

There are five stages of group development. The first stage is called the forming stage. Forming stage focuses around the team itself. This stage is where people get to know each other. The second stage is called storming stage which in a group development is characterized by intragroup conflict where there are cliques that form. The third stage is called norming stage which in group development is characterized by close relationships. The fourth stage is called performing stage which in group development means when the group is fully functional. The last stage is called adjourning stage which in group development for temporary groups are characterized by concern with wrapping up activities rather than performance.

After reading this case study, Christine being the team coordinator should have followed these five stages. The stage in which Christine’s group remains at now is the norming stage because at the end of the story Christine is faced with one group member not being part of the team meetings nor showing his part of the project. Everyone else having their parts ready to go for their presentation showed they were part of a team and enthusiastic whereas Mike having his own personal problems made the team fall apart. There can be five people in a group, but if one person doesn’t do their part, it will ruin the entire team as a whole. These five stages would have helped Christine and her team with knowledgeable background which builds a perfect team.

Part II: Problem Identification

There were primary and secondary problems which Christine and her group faced. For example, the primary problem in this case being Christine telling the group that Mike hasn’t participated nor has done his part of the project as well as informing the professor about Mike’s situation. The secondary problem is Christine feeling like she’s stuck in the middle, weather to cut Mike out of the group or feel bad for him and let him stay in the group....
