Riordan Manufacturing Business Systems

Riordan Manufacturing is a leader in the growing field of plastic molding industry. The company uses modern designing tools to create unique plastic designs. Riordan concentrate on various aspects of work to ensure quality, including extreme precision, focus to detail and quality control, which makes them the number one in the plastic molding field. To continue on their mission, Riordan is looking to ensure their business systems meet current and future operations.

The following is a review of current business systems and recommendations for new business systems. This service request will allow Riordan Manufacturing to understand their current environment and determine which systems would allow the continued growth and optimization of the company.

Operations

Riordan Manufacturing Operations consist of a Research and Development department at corporate headquarters in San Jose, California, plastic beverage container manufacturing at its Albany, Georgia facility, custom plastic fabrication, in its Pontiac, Michigan facility, and electric fan production at its Hangzhou, China facility.

Currently implemented are a common set of procedures for inventory management and control, which include for inventory during receiving, manufacturing, and shipping. Clerks enter data into the inventory system at the end of each day. This manual process would benefit from a RFID or barcode system. This would provide tracking, automatically updating inventory quantities, production progress, finished product, shipping, and receiving records.

The Albany plant currently stocks raw material and finished product to avoid late deliveries caused by adverse weather during the winter months. A VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory) software package will reduce or eliminate the safety stock of raw material and the storage of finished product while reducing supply chain costs (Pan Pro, 2004).
