The definition of media changes frequently and it also depends what generation you are asking. The generation I live in, has become obsessed with social media. It has become our own personal drug. To me, our generation is losing our ability to think for ourselves. We have lost our appreciation for time. Teens today, also known as the Facebook Generation or “digital natives,” are part of the first U.S. generation to be so closely identified with technology. Those ages 8 to 18 spend more than seven and a half hours a day with such devices.

In a more recent incident, the media coverage of an infamous Richard Sherman made America go wild. This type of media proves my point that people crave the drama. People would be quick to judge if they could only seen that one interview but now after they watch that one video, ten more videos will pop up showing you what a “thug” Richard is. The people who run the media take what you know about facts at face value. It’s little to know information. They found them as a public figure and he needs to address the media. Why does he need to do anything besides play football? We idolize these people. Sports stars, actors and actress, people who give us entertainment. We have become a society that needs to be controlled. Not only after he gave an interview, he was fined yet again for what he said.

Social media, such as Instagram and Twitter, have given gender roles a whole new meaning. Men, or immature boys, can be seen tweeting about sports games. Women, or foolish little girls, can be seen being overdramatic about a breakup or seen “subtweeting” another person. There are some harsh generalizations. One of my close friends told me that if I did not stop tweeting about how much I love my boyfriend that he was going to unfollow me. We have become so obsessed with what others are doing that it has taken over some of our lives. Some of my other friends will openly admit that they hate more than half the tweets they see...
