The Truth Is Always Better

“I’m willing to tell a lie. But just as a last resort- the truth’s always better.” Telling the truth is important. Honesty makes and keeps good, trustworthy relationships between people. Lying is not moral or ethical. Being untruthful creates tension in situations when a person is caught telling a lie, or when a person tells multiple lies and is not believed when he is not lying. It is better to tell the truth.

There are times when telling a lie gets a person out of a sticky situation, like a student who lies about doing his homework. The student may feel all right at first because his teacher did not lower his grade, but later, he may feel guilty for lying. It is important not to tell lies because a person who lies often is not easy to believe when he is telling the truth. The Boy Who Cried Wolf, one of Aesop’s fables, is a clear example of how a person is no longer believable after he lies about something so many times. Lying makes trusting a person difficult.

A person who does not tell the truth can be unreliable. Reliability is an important character trait to possess, and it creates good bonds between people. Unreliable people who lie often or enough to have a reputation as a liar do not have good relationships with people. Telling the truth matters in life because honesty helps make many decisions. If an unreliable coworker with a great personality constantly lies about why he is late to work, and his manager needs to do evaluations, he will not give that coworker a good evaluation because he is a nice guy. The continuous lies about not being on time will come into play and allow the manager to rate the coworker appropriately.

Trust is firm belief in the reliability, truth, or strength of someone or something. It is important in various different relationships.
