Race in My Community

While some people like to think that racism is a thing of the past, racial issues exist everywhere. Any given day if a person were to walk through my town; Morgantown, KY, they could see people of different races. However, they would see mostly white Americans and I can assure you, there will be prejudice.

Morgantown Statistics

The city of Morgantown, KY had 2,544 residents as of the 2000 census. Of the 2,544 residents 95.52 percent were white, 1.10 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.00 percent Pacific Islander, 2.36 percent claimed to be of other race, 0.55 percent from two or more races and 3.22 percent are Hispanic or Latino of any race. In Morgantown, KY whites make up the majority.

How am I similar to my other community members?

Therefore with white Americans making up the majority race, I can safely say that almost all member of my community do look like me. I am a white American and I am like the other members of my community. The only differences are height, weight, eye and hair color etc.

Race and Leadership in my Community

With the majority race in Morgantown being white Americans, it comes as no shock that all leadership positions are held by white Americans. There are similarities and differences between our community leaders and myself. The only differences between me and the leaders in my community are education levels and income.

Although all leadership positions in my community are held by white Americans, it is not necessarily a good thing. Minority groups are not represented as well as they should be. There is too much prejudice allowed in our community for everyone to be represented equally.

When the leaders in my community are dealing with people who are like me, they usually treat them with the up most respect. However, there are times when certain community leaders treat everyone differently. In my...
