The factors that have led to the success of Aravind Eye care hospital are:

* Lack of other such eye care centres

* Dedicated Staff

* Speciality Clinics

* Medical camps in small villages

The business model of doing treatment for free and having sponsors handling the customer acquisition and transportation costs has proven to be successful. Dr. V’s strategy of providing quality care in less developed areas of the county has avoided competition and given access to an untapped market.

The successes with both the ECCI and ICCI have been good. Especially since the organisation stated manufacturing its own IOL required for the ECCI.

Q.2 What has been doctor V’s role in all this?

It was doctor V who founded the Aravind Eye care hospital in 1976 with 20 beds initially.

Doctor V was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, and wanted to contribute to the nation’s service.

The entire hospital was up and running because of Dr. V and his family’s efforts. In fact the first 3 surgeons were Dr. V, his sister Dr. G Natchiar and her husband. Many more from his family contributed. For example his brother G Srinivasan, a civil engineer constructed the hospital and later on went on to become the financial manager.

He was the visionary behind the creation of Aravind Eye Hospital and dedicated his life in its expansion.
