Deception is shown throughout this novel.

The main example where this is shown is during the ghost writers encounter with Adam Lang. The former prime minister of Britain.

We first catch wind of this during the beginning when the ghost writers female friend, Kate brings up that Lang was a “War criminal”.

After the mysterious death of the previous ghost writer, Mike McAra, the main character went ahead to fill in his place and finish what McAra started.

The point for a ghost writer is to write an autobiography on the life of a certain person. For this you need real factual knowledge. Not fake boring glossy information.

When the ghost writer interviewed Lang and read the memoirs left by McAra, they both seemed so bland and uninteresting. The ghost writer was sure he was not being told the complete story about Lang's life whether it be by Lang himself, Lang's seemingly more politically skilled wife Ruth, or Lang's primary aide, Amelia Bly, with who Ruth believes her husband was having an affair. He was being payed a quarter of a million dollars to write something that people would want to read. Not another boring autobiography. Later on, the ghost writer picked up on a clue that McAra had left in one of his old boxes and finds evidence that Lang was lying during the interview about how he got into politics. This lead the main character to finding out about the war crimes Lang was involved in. Soon after, The Ghost's job became more difficult when the International Criminal Court charged Lang with war crimes while he was PM, the charges related to handing over suspected terrorists to the CIA for torture.

Despite signing a confidentiality agreement about the information found on Lang, the ghost writer broke it by telling the lead man in the Lang criminal case that he had proof about the war crimes committed. This...
