Public Lynching

In the regards of all the sources Legacies of Lynching, Southern Horrors Women and the Politics Rape and Lynching, Lynching is wrong due to the fact of racial discrimination. Lynching is defined as killing by a mob without the benefit of a trail or conviction. Lynching is a derivative term that was taken from the name of Charles Lynch who was a landowner in Virginia in 1790. At the end of the Civil War through 1941, there were 168 North Carolinians who lost their lives to lynching. The mob violence was often justified as a means of controlling the black population; “protecting” their white wives and daughters. People found legal attempts to deter lynching including the 1893 law that classified it as a felony and sought to hold a country liable for damages. These attempts generally failed because of a lack of local support and ineffectual enforcement by state officials.

Lynching did not come out of nowhere. Its actual and symbolic grounding in history and literature goes back to slavery and slavery's defining persons of African descent as property. During slavery there were numerous public punishments of slaves, none of which were preceded by trials or any other semblance of civil or judicial processes. Justice depended solely upon the slaveholder. Executions, whippings, brandings, and other forms of severe punishment, including sometimes the public separation of families, were meted out by authority or at the command of the master or his representative.
