Chapter 1

Intrapersonal Communication-The process of using messages to generate meaning within the self.

Transactional Communication Model-Exchanging of ideas between (usually) two people.

Communication Competence-The ability to effectively exchange meaning through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior.

Characteristics of Competent Communications-The use of several different communication mediums when appropriate to achieve one’s goals in conveying an idea or series of ideas to one’s audience.

Chapter 2

Empathy-The ability to put oneself in others’ emotions.

Self-esteem-Confidence.

Personality-Set of behaviors over a variety of situations.

Self Fulfilling Prophecy-Belief in something so strongly that it come to happen.

Chapter 3

Equivocal Language-the possibility of several different meanings, as a word or phrase, especially with intent to deceive or misguide; susceptible of double interpretation; deliberately ambiguous

Denotative-The agreed-upon meaning or dictionary meaning of a word.

Connotative-An individualized or personalized meaning of a word, which may be emotionally laden.

Euphemism-A more polite, pleasant expression used instead of a socially unacceptable form.

Chapter 4

Nonverbal communication

Repeating-occurs when the same message is sent verbally and nonverbally.

Emphasizing-use of nonverbal cues to strengthen your message.

Complimenting-verbal and nonverbal codes add meaning to each other.

Contradicting-verbal and nonverbal signals conflict.

Substituting-nonverbal codes are used instead of verbal codes.

Regulating-nonverbal codes are used to monitor and control interactions with others.

Why are Nonverbal Codes Difficult to Interpret?
