Abstract
Despite the federal government’s recent reduction in spending, federal government contracting is still a big business in the Department of Defense. The multitude of laws and regulations that control a company’s ability to successfully obtain and maintain a contract with the government can seem like a maze. The Defense Department procurement process can be confusing and complicated. The competition for contracts can be fierce. There is a lot of paperwork, but the Defense contracting can be profitable and rewarding. The regulations can be daunting since they seem to be the size of the tax code. Federal Government contracting has some of the same elements as contracting between private parties. The Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) allows a wide variety of contract types, based on the financial arrangement. The process of obtaining a government, department of defense contract will be discussed in this paper.
