“Performance improvement is the concept of measuring the output of a particular PROCESS or PROCEDURE, then modifying the process or procedure to increase the output, increase efficiency, or increase the effectiveness of the process or procedure.”

So this is about selecting the right process and measuring, analyzing, and improving it. Following questions will help you understand what needs to be thought about and done in the process of improving performance of a process.

Basic Process Improvement Model

This model lays down the general steps that need to be followed in process improvement. I’ve simplified the original model for you to grasp it fast.

Steps

1. Prioritize and select a process to be improved

2. Organize the right team

3. Define process measures (Identify Key areas to measure)

4. Set process targets/objectives

5. Map process using a flowchart

6. Simplify process and make changes

7. Measure, analyze, and improve

a. Develop a data collection plan

b. Collect data

c. Check if the process is stable (if not find and remove special causes)

d. Check if the process is capable (i.e. meet the process targets) (if not find and remove root causes)

e. Check if further improvement is feasible

8. Standardize the process (if further improvement is not feasible)

f. Institutionalize the improved process
