In the United States and worldwide there is a surge of advanced practice nurses. They are Registered Nurses that have advanced degrees with clinical training. There are four types of Advanced Practice Nursing: Nurse Practitioner (NP), Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), Certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), and Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM).

....As a Clinical Nurse Specialist you can teach new nursing staff and educate them on different and improved nursing practices. With the knowledge they have acquired about nursing practices they can provide better direct patient care, participate in research and have administrative or leadership roles. (Blais & Hayes, 2011)  As a leader and an expert they have the capability to be an educator and clinician to expand the quality and reducing cost for patients/clients, nurses and establishments.

Clinical Nurse Specialist can be leaders in “hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, their own offices, and other community-based setting such as industry, home care, and HMOs,” and educational institutions. (Zerwekh&Garneau, 2012) As certified Clinical Nurse Specialists they can conduct health assessments, make a diagnosis, provide treatment and come up with quality control methods. As mentioned, Clinical Nurse Specialist can have many roles for instance educator, researcher and consultants. As a consultant they can offer expertise on specific areas of practice to the health care team especially on multifaceted patients. They can design, implement and evaluate the programs of care and if they are not satisfied they have the capability to connect with other professionals throughout the institution to increase the patient chances of improving. The Clinical Nurse Specialists can implement the evidence-based practices and standards to improve the results of the health care institutions.
