Diversity

Before reading a person might think the passage is going to mostly be about race but once finished he might be really surprised. In this passage diversity is examined from different stand points. In the passage the author references The Great Gatsby and how Jay Gatsby, whom is really Jimmy Gatz, went from a poor boy to a rich man. The thing that was really interesting is even with all his money he couldn’t win the heart of Daisy Buchanan. For even though he was white he wasn’t white enough. Diversity is becoming more complex than it just being race.

The passage doesn’t deplete the fact that race is not a factor in diversity for it still is just not as big of an issue. Society is trying to make people more color-conscious instead of color-blind. So that instead of saying your race doesn’t matter they want to celebrate it. We don’t look at race as it once was. But we are starting to look more to the money aspect of that gives us status.

According to “the Economist” there has been a “huge increase in inequality in America”. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. The gap is growing daily between the economic classes in America. The author gives great references to represent his take on diversity. It could be very eye opening his take on diversity and the way it is explained.
