You are now ready to begin on the left margin. This is a block style letter and EVERYTHING will be on the left margin. This is the style of letter formatting we will use for this course. There are other styles that are discussed in the textbook and examples can be found in the Appendix of the text or online text. If you would like to make a letterhead for your letter, you are welcome to do so. Please be sure you do this in the “header” feature of Word. This will allow you to begin your letter at the correct top margin. Your letterhead does not need to be too big. You want to be sure that it does not take up half the page. From here you are ready to begin your letter by keying in the date of your letter.

Once the date is keyed in, you will want to hit enter 4 times. This will give you the appropriate space before you begin the mailing address of your letter.

For the mailing address, you will want the person’s name (a title may be place after a comma or on the next line), then the address. Be sure that you use the correct abbreviation for the state. In many of our assignments, you will not be given a mailing address so you will want to just make up an address so that you have a fully formatted document. Once the mailing address is place properly, you will want to enter twice to begin the opening of your letter.

In the opening for all our letters, we will use open punctuation. Open punctuation means that there is not colon at the end of the opening and there is no comma after the closing. In the example here you will note that there is no punctuation after Dr. Roberts....
