Sample Outline Structure

Specific Purpose: To persuade my class why soccer is better than football.

Introduction:

I. No matter what country you go to in the world you will see someone playing soccer, not football.

II. I’m sure that most of you have played either played soccer or football before in your life.

III. The debate on if soccer or football is better has been argued countless times with no clear winner.

IV. I had to pick between the two sports going into high school, due to them being in the same season, and picked soccer and will tell you why it is better.

Central Idea: Soccer is better than football because it is more entertaining, requires more skill, and is the original football.

Body:

I. Soccer is more entertaining than football and constantly keeps the fans involved.

A. Soccer has no commercial breaks.

1. It seems like when watching a football game you watch more commercials than actual game sometimes.

2. According to the Wall Street Journal, on an average 174 minute broadcast of an NFL game, the actual amount of time where the ball is in play is 11 minutes.

a. That leaves you watching about an hour of commercials on average.

b. The rest of your time is spent watching replays of what happened.

3. Soccer has much less down time.

a. Soccer only has commercials at halftime.

b. Soccer is contently moving and doesn’t stop from play to play.

B. In soccer you are allowed to celebrate freely.

1. In football you are only allowed to celebrate by yourself and without the ball.

2. In soccer everything goes and creativity is encouraged.

C. Lastly, it is more entertaining for the ladies getting to watch all the sculpted men.

1. Soccer has the best looking men.

2. All the players take their shirts off at the end of the game.
