1.1 MURUGAPPA GROUP

Murugappa Group is a growing Indian business conglomerate, based out of a head-office at Chennai, India. It has a highly diversified portfolio of product offerings, such as Plantations, Abrasives, General Insurance, Engineering, Cycles, Sugar, Farm Inputs, Finance, Fertilizers, Nutraceuticals, and Bio-products. Its manufacturing facilities are located all over the country at 13 different locations, and the group gives employment to a professional and dedicated work-force of over 32000 people. Its fast growth into a highly diversified company also stems out of the forging of strong alliances and ventures with leading global giants in the related segments.

It all began with a dream of Dewan Bahadur A M Murugappa Chettiar. Today, it has come true and is glaring enough for the world to notice. The beginning was humble and the growth story envisages a lot of structural changes in the early period. However, after the birth of the present group as we see it, the growth trajectory has mostly been carved out on relatively focused strategic intent and risk taking capabilities.

The growth was glaringly visible in terms of black and white. Ever since the group crossed the coveted turnover figure of US dollars 1 billion in 2003-04, the targets have been set higher and higher. The envisioned figure for turnover stands at US dollars 7.2 billion for the year 2013-14. With a century full of varied experiences in its kitty, the group is all set to take on new challenges in terms of building itself as a global leader.
