The Decision Making Process

It all began on May 2005 and I still remember it as if it was like yesterday. I had just returned home from my 2 year deployment in Iraq and hadn’t a clue what I was going to do with my life. As days turned into months, the small fear that had always lingered in the back of my mind began to manifest itself into reality. I really needed to begin my career and as to how far would I go to achieve the start of it? Within this question, I broke it down to three categories. How much risk would it require for me to take? Am I confident with my skills that I would have minimal uncertainties? Would I have a back-up plan in case things did not go as they had attended to?

I have never been the type of person to not take initiative. Regardless of the consequences, whether good or bad, once I made a decision, I immediately followed up with the execution. I began to apply for jobs from one end of California to the other. Even though I still didn’t know what I wanted to do, I determined that I would continue working in different environments, and professions until I finally knew. My employment history ranges from being a flower delivery boy to selling stock and life insurance.

It wasn’t till 7 years later that I finally found my calling. I was hired as the Staff Operation Training Specialist for the US Federal Government and the Department of Defense and can officially say that my career has begun.

My plan required 3 simple steps. To visualize and write down what it was I was trying to accomplish, to begin research and preparation of any necessary equipment needed, and to execute my plan with a clear goal in mind. Although Chapter 3 decision making process description is very similar to mines, it includes a few more detailed steps, but overall it follows the same guidelines my decision making process.
