SUBJECT: Team Leadership

In response to the companies plan to enter a new market segment, the new team that has been created to accomplish the desired goals must be approached in a tactful way. When a new team is assembled their personality traits need to be considered to lead the team effectively. This group consists of five members; Shana, Jorge, Sierra, Blanca, and Erin. Each member of the team has completed a personality assessment that gave each of them their four letter code designation. Each four letter code has its own explanation. The personality codes that make up this team are ESTJ, ENTP, INTP, and ENFJ. Understanding these codes will help determine what leadership approaches to use.

Shana and Erin both scored as ESTJ. ESTJ personalities are explained to be realistic, logical, analytical, and decisive. They have an inherent head for business and mechanics. They also like to organize and be in charge of things. Jorge scored as ENTP. ENTP personalities are explained to be innovative, individualistic, versatile, and entrepreneurial. Sierra scored as INTP. INTP personalities are explained to be socially cautious and highly conceptual. They enjoy problem solving. Blanca scored as ENFJ. ENFJ personalities are explained to be charismatic, compassionate, and very persuasive. Knowing the team members personality traits and understanding them is necessary in placing each person in the most beneficial role for each of them and the team.

When leading a team full of many personalities there are a large variety of leadership styles to consider. Exhibit 17-2 on page 463 in the text, Management 11th Ed, lists these leadership styles. Of the University of Iowa leadership studies, the Autocratic style and the Laissez-faire style would be effective with the team and its personalities. The Autocratic style...
